Throughout history, photography has been regarded as a record of memory, a captured moment, a trace left on the negative. The aim of this workshop is to use photography as a material and memorial record on fabric in the form of a memory quilt. A memory quilt is a handmade blanket created as a remembrance of family or personal history. Traditionally, old materials, old clothes, and various fabrics are used in its creation, onto which photographs are then sewn. Memory quilts are associated with the ritual of passage (Arnold Van Gennep, 1909) during significant moments such as birth, death, or other important anniversaries in an individual’s life. The selected photographs for the quilt should have emotional and personal significance and must be independently taken, with the photographs forming a narrative. For this workshop, students photographed Maribor as a marker of space and designed their own phototextures. Each quilt is expected to have a theoretical foundation and to connect the artistic work with interdisciplinary humanities theories. The emphasis is on the process of creating the photograph, sewing it onto fabric, collaging various motifs, and creating new meaning. The project’s aim was thus to connect the fields of art and humanities within the framework of two courses: ‘Textile Design and Creation’ and ‘New Media and Fashion’.
